Designed by Auguste Bartholdi and with a support designed by Gustave Eiffel, the Statue of Liberty was a gift from the French to the American people. It was completed in 1886. A somewhat smaller version may be seen in Paris, standing in the middle of the river Seine. The American version welcomed many migrants to New York as they sailed into the port.
